Like any other industry, the drilling industry also produces wastes which are released into the environment. In case there is no plan for their treatment and elimination they will leave unfavorable impacts on the environment in the long term. Therefore, due to the obligation for protecting the environment for future generations, it would be inevitable to get familiar with drilling operations and its possible impacts on the environment.

Waste Management

Onshore Drilling

In order to gather cuttings from onshore drilling, mud pits or mud tanks are used. These tanks are isolated (geotextile) and inclined so that the drilling cuttings would not be released into the environment. The cuttings accumulated in these tanks are moved into a place prepared in advance for destruction or recycling.

Offshore Drilling
  • Drilling mud recycling and reuse: Offshore drilling devices, which are equipped with advanced shake shakers and numerous sifts, have high capability in separating cuttings, drying and packaging for delivery onshore. Such equipment as sand trap for deposits, degasser for separation of gases and steams, vortex, mud cleaner, desander and centrifuges for separation of materials from drilling mud facilitate the recycling of mud at a high return rate and prevent the release of mud or cuttings into sea.
  • Garbage management: Using garbage separation system in offshore drilling devices for separating garbage for delivery onshore for destruction or recycling .
  • Incinerator: Using incinerators on offshore drilling devices

Waste and Sewage Management

Onshore Drilling

In order to manage waste and sewage in onshore drilling devices, portable packages of waste treatment are used. These systems are the simplest and the most applied unit in the treatment of waste, particularly health and human wastes. Waste is treated in these tanks through processes like depositing, floating and biological procedures.

Offshore Drilling
  • Sewage Treatment System: Offshore drilling services are fitted with sewage treatment. All wastes and sewages on the platform are gathered and transported to this system. After treatment and disinfection, they are released into sea in full safety and in compliance with standards.
  • Slug system for controlling water running on the mast and bilge system for controlling oily water
  • Used oil and used lubes, consumed by engines and washing, are gathered by canals and systems and led into the Oily Water Separator. This system separates oil and petroleum products from water in order to prevent their release into sea.

Environment

Environmental maneuvers

Among the most important environmental maneuvers under way by North Drilling is the exercise for combating oil spill at sea. By equipping Behshahr logistics base and vessels with systems for controlling and gathering oil slicks caused by possible oil spill, North Drilling has facilitated the prevention of spread of oil slicks and absorption of oily materials by boom skimmer. Furthermore, in line with the objective of implementing international conventions, North Drilling has held drills in cooperation with Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) and Caspian Sea littoral oil companies in order to prepare for fighting oil spills.
